Abstract:
The importance of Diabetes Melittus (DM) to the health system has been increasing not only because of its increasing prevalence, but also because it is usually associated with other complications. Based on this information, we highlight the need to improve care and innovate the practice of nursing with a view to reality using technological modernity for better care, but also humanizing and welcoming care. This study aims to identify the knowledge and characterize the self-care of insulin-dependent diabetic patients enrolled in a Family Health Strategy unit to subsidize the construction of an application related to self-care and glycemic self-monitoring. This is a descriptive, quantitative field research performed with a group of diabetic patients assisted in a Family Health Strategy Unit in Greater São Paulo with follow-up of withdrawal of insulin, needle syringes, hypodermic needle). Two validated data collection instruments were used for Brazilian culture, namely: Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (QCD) aimed at raising awareness about the disease and the Diabetes Self-Care and Self-Care Questionnaire - QAAD that characterizes the self-care of the carrier of diabetes. It was found that a series of basic concepts about the disease are not fully known by the diabetic population and based on the data obtained in this study, it was interesting to note that the study population has no question regarding the knowledge of DM disease. With respect to treatment, most individuals with DM believe that eating healthy is more important than the medications prescribed by the physician, but they also recognize the importance of taking these medications. Individuals with DM who are interviewed are aware of complications from the disease. The present study shows the possibility of an association between the practice of physical activity and glycemic control. Although it is known to patients that physical exercise should be part of DM treatment, as well as diet and medication, such practice unfortunately is not yet part of the routine of these individuals. It was concluded that the changes in glycemic values were not associated to non-compliance with medical prescription, but mainly to food consumption and lack of physical activity. Based on this information was created an application that has 11 (eleven) screens where users will have free access. On the initial screen there is information about disease (DM), signs and symptoms of diabetes, insulin application sites, feeding tips, physical activities and complications. Under the conditions of the present study, it can be concluded that the changes in glycemic values were not associated to non-adherence to medical prescription, but mainly to food consumption and lack of physical activity. The level of knowledge and self-care identified were important for the elaboration of the prototype application that aims to better meet the needs of the person with DM.Keywords:
