Abstract:
Nowadays computers have become a very familiar tool for many learners all over the world. With the progress in the technology, learners can get more and more opportunities and advantages to develop themselves. One of the new media learners can use is the World Wide Web. In the past they can only read whatever written in/provided by the web designers, but now it is made possible for anybody to be involved in the writing of it too, as it is called as the Read/Write Web by Richardson (2009). This Read/Write Web holds transformational changes in store for teachers and students of all stripes (Richardson, 2009:3). However, not many people are ready to change and to take the most advantage of the Web in terms of language learning. Sampoerna School of Education (SSE), as a very new school has a vision of producing highly qualified teachers who are ICT literate, therefore ICT is introduced from the very beginning of the students studying course. On the other hand, the use of ICT in language learning is not yet common in Indonesia, in which most of teaching learning interaction will take the classic form, i.e. classroom interaction using books as the main media. One of the subjects students take in SSE is Integrated English Language Learning (IELL). In this subject students learn English yet at the same time utilizing ICT, i.e. creating a digital story as the main goal of the course. Students can then upload their stories to a web or their own blog. Thus, they are now not only readers but also writers of the web. This paper is going to describe the problems and advantages students experience during a language class that utilizes ICT. The data is obtained from a questionnaire. Hopefully this will elicit further discussion and input from other scholars who have similar experience so that this IELL class can be improved for the sake of students’ learning.
