Abstract:
Universities in the Slovak Republic in order to improve the quality of their education are currently preparing for the accreditation of their study programs in accordance with the accepted EU standards. This process requires the transformation of existing internal quality systems at universities, the definition of new rules, principles and procedures in the creation, modification and cancellation of study programs.

Based on their own experience, the authors of the article present the methodological procedure and optimal schedule of preparation for accreditation on the example of the Faculty of Safety Engineering of the University of Zilina (FSE UNIZA). Based on the analysis of the internal and external environment, they identify weaknesses in accreditation processes, define new challenges and good practice in all phases of preparation for accreditation and in the phase of its implementation. At the same time, with their recommendations, the authors contribute to the study programs being designed not only professionally but also didactically as unique. The article can be an inspiration for the creators of study programs and university teachers, because it draws attention to weak points in the accreditation process, offers practical examples and recommendations, the creative application of which in teaching is of fundamental importance for the quality of education at universities, will enable higher education and evaluation to be more strongly oriented towards student and will support his/her active role, autonomy and creativity.
