Abstract:
The MUSIC® Model, proposed by Jones (2009, 2018), integrates theories and research on motivation in education and is a valuable tool for professors and instructional designers in designing courses that enhance student motivation. Jones developed the MUSIC® Model of Academic Motivation Inventory to measure the five critical components of the MUSIC model in a college course. The results from this inventory help identify components needing improvement to enhance student motivation. Each of the five components is associated with four or five strategies, totaling 23. Additionally, some examples are provided for each strategy. For components that received low scores in the student's evaluation of the inventory, professors should consider what strategies and examples to employ to enhance the effectiveness of their instruction. In this study, we developed a checklist to assist professors and instructional designers in selecting appropriate motivational strategies. This checklist, comprising 31 items, is based on the strategies and examples from the MUSIC model. Students utilize the checklist to verify the implementation of professors' motivational strategies. The checklist results can be used to identify strategies that professors are not implementing or that students perceive that professors are not executing. In developing the checklist, students were asked for feedback on items they felt were unclear, and we revised them. By having students complete the checklist in addition to the Motivation Inventory, professors and instructional designers can more efficiently focus on strategies and examples to improve necessary components.
