Abstract:
This study investigates the socioeconomic status on academic performance of 120 Bauchi secondary school students, examining factors like class placement, attendance, grade repetition, university plans, financial aid, parental guidance, and occupation.
Ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association (χ2 = [chi-square value], df = [degrees of freedom], p < 0.05) between predictors and student academic performance.
Findings indicated that SES significantly affected students' academic performance, with students with higher SES performing better. Attendance rates were positively correlated with academic achievement, highlighting the importance of regular class attendance. Students with university plans show higher academic performance than students without clear aspirations.
Proximity to school plays a crucial role, as students living closer to their schools achieve better academic results.
The study highlights the impact of socioeconomic factors on secondary school students' academic performance in Bauchi State. To improve academic outcomes, policymakers and educators should consider socioeconomic factors, attendance rates, university plans, school proximity, and parental background. Addressing students without clear aspirations, providing career counseling, and bridging the socioeconomic gap through scholarships, financial aid, and mentorship programs can help students stay motivated and focused. Collaborating with schools and parents is crucial for fostering a strong foundation for student achievement. Keywords:
