Abstract:
The study aimed to establish the relationship between self-concept, addiction to social networks and student performance of adolescents from the San Martin de Porras District of Lima. The population was 840 students and the probabilistic sample of 263 secondary school students. The Social Network Addiction Questionnaire (SNAQ, ARS in Spanish) and the Self-Concept Test (SCT, CAG in Spanish) were applied to these students. The predominant level of performance was the regular level with 59.7%. A significant negative correlation (-0.37) was found between the level of addiction to social networks and academic performance. A positive correlation was found between self-concept and academic performance (0.25). The level of self-concept was higher in men than in women, this difference being significant. The level of addiction to social networks was higher in men than in women, this difference not being significant. The results show that when the use of social networks increases, academic performance decreases; while the greater self-concept improves school performance in adolescents. It is urgent to develop the level of self-concept of the students and to promote mechanisms of prevention to the addiction of social networks.
