Abstract:
The advancements in digital technologies, specifically the increasing interest in the content creation field, have highlighted the increased trend of using AI algorithms to aid in creating or automatically generating content such as images, videos, audio, and text. These artificial Intelligence-based tools have increasingly gained traction as innovative teaching tools in EFL classes. Despite the abundant availability of individual studies, there remains a need for systematic reviews to understand the potential impact of AI evolution on future teaching and learning. This systematic review aimed to examine the available AI tools and categorise them according to the produced content, and explore their advantages and challenges for English Language and Literature teaching via reviewing and analysing 20 articles indexed in WOS, SCOPUS and Taylor&Francis Online databases carried out between 2018 – 2023, coinciding with the period after the coronavirus breakout. The overview of current methodologies implementing AI-based programmes is further supposed to shed light on which digital competencies pre-service English language and literature teachers need to develop as modern AI enables the possibility of playing vital roles in education.
