INTEGRATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INTO HIGHER EDUCATION: AN APPROACH BASED ON STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Abstract:
The dynamic development of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally changing the requirements for higher education, learning methods, and the expectations of both students and educators. Integrating AI into the university environment represents a complex challenge that requires a systematic connection of technological possibilities with the real needs of users. Universities currently face an urgent need to create a clear, ethical, and pedagogically sustainable framework for AI use that supports the development of critical thinking and academic integrity.
The aim of this paper is to identify key student requirements for using AI in the educational process and transform these requirements into specific institutional measures.
The methodology includes a combination of secondary and primary research. Secondary research analysed professional sources and global surveys on AI in education. Primary research was conducted via a questionnaire survey among students at the University of Žilina. The data obtained were analysed for content and frequency and subsequently synthesized into student requirements by applying the Voice of the Customer (VOC) method. The QFD (Quality Function Deployment) method was then used to transform these identified requirements into design measures.
Research results indicate that students perceive AI as a natural part of their studies. The most frequent uses include searching for information, creating or paraphrasing texts, and brainstorming. Despite this, students face several barriers: low awareness of rules, inconsistent approaches from teachers, and a lack of institutional support. The application of the QFD method highlighted the necessity of creating a unified university directive, an ethical and methodological framework, and the development of AI literacy for both students and staff. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of student manuals, practical workshops, and the introduction of AI-resistant forms of assessment.
The integration of AI into the academic environment must move toward the modernization of teaching and the strengthening of digital competencies rather than remaining just a technological trend. Only a coordinated approach that considers the voice of students and the preparedness of teachers will allow the potential of AI to be utilized in a safe and meaningful way.Keywords:
