Abstract:
Stateville Speaks is a newsletter written by both prison inmates and university students. Prisoners learn of its motto: “If you speak, you will be heard.” Newsletter content focuses on the American criminal justice system that incarcerates a larger percentage of its population than does any other country on earth. Stateville Speaks is a project-based curricular innovation created using 20th Century skills including communication, collaboration, creative innovation, critical thinking, information and media management, and technology expertise. It raises the awareness of students and leads them to work for reform and justice. Stateville Speaks is a local innovation that serves US prisons in the state of Illinois. It is named for Stateville, an Illinois prison. It is available on the Internet and serves as a model of curricular innovation that can be replicated in other states and countries. Keywords:
