Abstract:
Scientific studies prove that individual generations differ from each other. Generation Z is a specific group of people born in a certain period, who were influenced by scientific and technical progress as well as the geopolitical situation in the world. Educational institutions, including high schools, colleges, and universities, are actively seeking to cultivate interest in STEM subjects among Generation Z students. Despite targeted efforts, however, there is a continuing decline in Generation Z students' interest in STEM subjects. This paper aims to present the findings of an analysis focused on Generation Z students and their performance in mathematics and physics at a technical university in Slovakia. The analysis revealed a declining enrolment of students at the Slovak Technical University, particularly in mathematics and physics. Moreover, the study indicates a worsening trend in academic performance over the analysed period. The insights gained and recommendations formulated from this study can be utilised to enhance the educational experience at universities, particularly in the realm of STEM subjects.
