Abstract:
The implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) when connecting automated systems and users spread around the world is inevitable today. Therefore, in educational systems, pupils and students are introduced to the basics of the IoT concept as early as possible. When students in higher education become familiar with IoT systems, they can be entrusted with more complex projects.

This paper will briefly describe the main characteristics of IoT systems and terms that need to be understood before someone starts with their implementation. After that, the student's solution is presented on how to modernize an existing machine that does not have the ability of Internet connection, by upgrading it with external modules. Temperature, humidity, pressure sensors as well as a fan (control object) were used to demonstrate control and monitoring via the IoT platform.

Furthermore, the applicability of the student-realized circuit with the ESP8266 microcontroller and Universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) communication for data exchange with the Arduino development platform is tested. Finally, the possibilities of improving students' skills through the increased engagement of teachers in innovating the content of existing courses or introducing new courses were analyzed.
