SUPPORTING PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS WITH DIGITAL LEARNING PATHWAYS: DEVELOPMENT AND FEASIBILITY OF THE LILO PLATFORM

Abstract:
Digital technologies increasingly support teachers in designing structured and differentiated learning environments. In physical education (PE), however, teachers often lack the specific knowledge and digital tools that help them organize progressive learning pathways and visualize the development of motor skills. To accommodate this, the LiLO platform was developed as a digital professionalization tool to support PE teachers in designing and implementing structured skill progressions through interactive “content maps”.

This study is part of the research project PE2030: Digital support and innovative tools for the physical education teacher of the future. The first objective of the project was to explore the needs of PE teachers and teacher educators regarding the implementation of the LiLO platform in their teaching practice. A feasibility study was conducted with 30 participants, including in-service and pre-service PE teachers from six secondary schools and one teacher education program in Belgium. Participants were introduced to the platform and used it during a teaching period of four to six weeks.

After this implementation phase, data were collected using the System Usability Scale (SUS), the Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT), the Net Promoter Score (NPS), and focus group discussions. The results indicate a high level of usability (SUS score: 78.4), suggesting good to excellent usability of the platform. The Customer Satisfaction Score reached 73.9%, indicating overall satisfaction, although participants highlighted the need for a broader range of sports content and greater differentiation possibilities for students with different skill levels. The Net Promoter Score was positive (13.79), reflecting a general willingness among participants to recommend the platform.

Qualitative analysis of the focus group discussions revealed four main themes related to usability, pedagogical value, diversity of content, and practical classroom implementation. Based on these findings, the LiLO platform was further optimized by expanding the available content maps, improving the interactivity of the website, structuring exercises across six skill levels, and facilitating access to instructional video material for students.

Future research will investigate the impact of the platform on the effectiveness of physical education lessons and on teachers’ ability to structure learning pathways.
