USE OF ICT IN THE CLASSROOM: A CASE STUDY WITH STUDENTS OF VOCATIONAL COURSES FROM FOUR PORTUGUESE SCHOOLS

Abstract:
Today the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in teaching is an indispensable condition to prepare students to enter the job market. Bearing in mind that vocational courses have in their genesis the preparation of students for this purpose, it is important to understand the integration of ICT in the teaching-learning process. Are schools teaching students to make an enriching use of ICT? Are students prepared to work with technologies outside the walls of schools? In order to answer these questions, a questionnaire was applied in the classroom to 172 students of vocational courses from 4 Portuguese schools and the data was analyzed in SPSS 26. The main conclusions of the study reveal that the use of the computer and the Internet is mainly done in the computer rooms, while in the remaining classrooms, to use the computer, students have to bring their laptop. The most frequent use of technological resources takes place in the technical component subjects, but their use is, however, more diversified in relation to learning activities. Teachers seem more confident in the use of ICT, which is reflected in the different tasks assigned with digital resources that they give students. A possible explanation is the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced teachers and students to have classes remotely. For this, it was necessary to create digital strategies and resources that would lead to student learning. The equipment available in the classrooms is obsolete and in need of renovation, which if it does not happen, it will harm students' learning and interest.
