Abstract:
Bilingualism is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon in the 21st century, with code-switching emerging as a salient feature of everyday communication. This study examines the relationship between code-switching and cognitive flexibility, focusing on how bilinguals manage multiple languages and exercise executive control. Different types of bilingualism (simultaneous vs. sequential, balanced vs. unbalanced) and forms of code-switching (intersentential, intrasentential, tag-switching) are discussed alongside their sociolinguistic functions. Empirical evidence from behavioral and neuroimaging studies suggests that frequent code-switching may enhance cognitive flexibility and executive functioning, although findings on the “bilingual advantage” remain mixed. Neural correlates identified through fMRI and EEG indicate that language control engages brain regions associated with attention, task-switching, and cognitive regulation. The study concludes that code-switching can serve as a natural form of cognitive training, and highlights directions for future research on multilingualism, developmental factors, and longitudinal effects.Keywords:
