Abstract:
Traditional Education (TradEd) particularly learning and teaching through human interaction has temporarily been substituted with an increase in Technology education (TechEd) globally. Especially, with governmental social distancing measures implemented as a result of the recent coronavirus pandemic. The importance of online learning has currently become imperative but was recognized prior to the pandemic within higher education institutions globally. Information and Communication Technologies have evolved to Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) from Student Information Systems (SIS). However, the effectiveness of designing, teaching and assessing these courses online can be challenging. Purpose – The objective of this study is to investigate the transformation to TechEd in the 21st century from TradEd, the reasons and benefits of the transformation with recommendations in innovating learning approaches. Methods- A systematic literature review was carried out by means of a literature search in the subject of Technological Education and Traditional Education were identified through databases and other information sources like magazines and Journals. Sources were screened to ensure eligibility relating to the subject criteria through adhering to defined search terms with inclusion and exclusion criteria. This systematic method was carried out to obtain an understanding of the education system since digitalization and identify tends. Results- TechEd within higher education institutions has progressed due to increased globalization. This has resulted in changes within the infrastructure of private and governmental higher educational systems economizing resources. There is still a requirement for traditional education although TechEd has many benefits it is a complex entity which is continuously evolving requiring teachers and students to understand and relearn new software and programs. E-learning methods, E-notes, Admissions, exams, teaching internationally, library’s all online. However, difficulties endured included technological failures or associated change and human challenges. Added psychological burden, work environment, international language barriers, feedback and online distraction issues. An amalgamation of TradEd associated with human interaction and TechEd learning processes are required for effective student, teacher education to occur providing hope and not hype. Conclusions/discussion- The transition from TradEd to TechEd is not easy due to the constant evolution of new advancements requiring orientation and training, this can result in challenges within education. However, functional, technological and human perspectives are required for students and teachers to grow individually and in unison. Therefore, by mixing and adapting human and technological approaches relating to methods and application will aid lifelong learning not just within the 21st century and create best practice for a progressive future in TechEd.
