Abstract:
The rapid digital transformation of healthcare systems requires higher education to move beyond defining competencies toward systematically embedding them in educational practice. While interdisciplinary and competency-based frameworks in digital health are widely discussed at conceptual and policy levels, limited research addresses how these frameworks can be translated into scalable, cross-institutional curriculum systems.
This paper focuses explicitly on the transition from theory to practice and identifies a critical implementation gap: the absence of structured mechanisms that operationalise interdisciplinary digital health competencies into aligned course-level design across universities. Drawing on the international DS4Health MSc programme, the study presents a cross-institutional model, jointly developed and implemented by six leading universities (NOVA University Lisbon, Portugal, RWTH Aachen University Hospital, Germany, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, University of Ioannina, Greece, Institute Polytechnique de Paris, France, Tel Aviv University, Israel), that transforms abstract competency frameworks into coordinated curriculum architecture, shared pedagogical processes and sustainable governance structures.
The model integrates three pedagogical pillars: interdisciplinary bridging, Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and Project-Based Learning (PBL) within a single systemic design.
A jointly developed foundational semester acts as an infrastructural layer that establishes a shared analytical and conceptual language among students from diverse academic backgrounds. This structure enables coherent progression into specialised pathways while maintaining competency alignment across partner institutions.
OBE serves as the operational translation mechanism: clearly defined learning outcomes are mapped to teaching strategies, assessment design and feedback loops, ensuring that competencies function as structuring principles of course implementation rather than aspirational statements. PBL further anchors theory in practice through authentic digital health challenges, multidisciplinary projects and simulation-based learning that require integration of technical, clinical and organisational dimensions.
The key contribution of this paper lies in articulating a replicable model for scaling theory-to-practice translation across institutions.
Unlike programme specific descriptions, the study conceptualises curriculum transformation as an engineered system combining shared academic infrastructure, aligned outcome mapping and dual-layer validation processes. A consortium-level peer validation workflow, alongside internal institutional review, ensures coherence, transparency, and continuous improvement across national and organisational boundaries.
By reframing competency integration as a structural and governance challenge, not merely a pedagogical one, the paper advances a transferable blueprint for transforming digital health education at scale. It demonstrates how interdisciplinary competency frameworks can evolve from conceptual reference models into coordinated, sustainable and system-level educational practice.Keywords:
