Abstract:
This paper aims to enhance the understanding of diversity and inclusion in education. As schools worldwide become increasingly diverse in terms of special educational needs, learning skills, ethnic and minority groups, gender identity, and sexual orientation, there is a growing demand for greater attention to diversity and actions that promote inclusion. Given the rising significance of diversity and inclusion in the educational context, educational scholars are increasingly interested in examining the reasons for, effects of, and challenges and opportunities related to these concepts. As education is a human right, and access to and participation in school education is a universal right and duty, it is crucial that schools offer high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education, ensuring that no one is left behind due to factors related to diversity. While diversity is often explored from the perspective of business organizations, there is a pressing need for more research within the educational context. This article draws on international studies exploring diversity and inclusion in education and closely related concepts. A qualitative research method based on a literature survey was employed, though the study does not aim to conduct a systematic literature review. Rather, it seeks to highlight the most prevalent opportunities and challenges associated with diversity and inclusion across various educational institutions and levels. The results reveal that diversity, inclusion, and equity should be regarded as overarching principles guiding educational policies, plans, and practices. Educational institutions should create equitable environments that offer the best learning opportunities to diverse student populations, foster students' well-being, and help them achieve their full educational potential. However, significant challenges remain in defining diversity and inclusion and implementing inclusive practices in education.
