Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to study to what extend the use of presentation-practice-production (PPP) approach in teaching interpreting at university is efficient in modern realities (based on the examples of Kazan Federal University and Kazan Innovative University named after V.G. Timiryasov). The approach is well-known for its universal character especially in teaching grammar and vocabulary, but the case of interpretation has not been under thorough analysis yet. As the process of interpretation from a foreign language into a native one and vice versa is not only about grammar and vocabulary, the paper will be useful for both teachers/professors and students who are involved into the sphere of translation and interpretation.

The objectives of the research are: to find benefits and drawbacks of PPP approach in comparison with alternative ones (guided discovery and test-teach-test); to analyse the frequency and efficiency of using the approach in groups of students with upper-intermediate and advanced levels of the English language as well as difficulties they face with while interpreting texts.

The research methodology is based on: the comparative analysis of three popular approaches used by the teachers all over the world in dealing with foreign languages and the way they can be applied for the university course of interpretation; the results of the observations on three groups of students during one semester (February-May, 2022) – group A (upper-intermediate B2, only PPP approach), group B (advanced C1, a combination of PPP approach + alternatives), group C (mixed B2/C1, a combination of PPP approach + alternatives).

The results of the research reveal the main drawbacks of using only presentation-practice-production approach (boring, demotivating, passive students, etc.); and at the same time high level of efficiency in combination with other approaches.
