Abstract:
Simulation is an effective teaching methodology that allows students to experiment, learn from mistakes, and gain experience in a risk-free environment. Recent studies have highlighted the high degree of realism achievable through simulation techniques. In the dental profession, communication skills are of utmost importance.
The primary objective of this study was to enhance students' communication skills by implementing a comprehensive Transversal Simulation Program within the Dentistry Degree curriculum. This program consisted of Complex Simulation activities (Simulated Environments) that were interconnected and designed to progress in complexity as students advanced through their courses.
The focus of the Transversal Complex Simulation Program was to prepare students for real-world scenarios, specifically targeting the challenges encountered during "A First Visit in the Dental Office." As students progressed through their academic years, the complexity of the simulations increased, enabling them to feel more confident and competent in handling such situations in real clinical practice.
The program concentrated on three crucial clinical situations in dental practice: the first visit (1st, 2nd, and 3rd years), managing dissatisfied patients (4th year), and handling disagreements with co-workers (5th year). Through complex simulation in clinical scenarios, students were given opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Moreover, the program built on previously acquired skills, reinforcing and expanding students' capabilities as they advanced through higher-level courses.
Participating students experienced real-life scenarios in a safe and guided manner, thereby fostering the development of their communication skills. This approach not only increased their self-confidence but also provided valuable insights into their strengths and areas for improvement. After participating in the simulation activities, the students were asked to respond to a satisfaction survey, evaluating the experience they had undergone. Overall, the Transversal Complex Simulation Program was met with positive feedback from students, who found the experience enriching and beneficial to their professional development.
