Abstract:
Language learning involves four skills, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Out of these, Reading is a skill which helps readers not only to gain knowledge but also furthers the development of other language skills. The habit of reading is therefore extremely important. In this research paper, an attempt is made to explore and assess the reading habits of the students studying in the Department of English in University of Sirte.
Reading is not only an extremely important language learning skill but also instrumental in increasing knowledge as well as being a pleasurable pastime. But it was observed that the students of the department of English of this university, which is their alma mater, are rarely seen with any other books in their hands except their subject notes. The researcher therefore decided to conduct this research in an attempt to find out about the reading habits of the students.
According to information available, this is the first time that any research on this topic is being done. It aims to explore and understand the reading habits of students of English department in Sirte University and the problems regarding it. The findings of the research will help in search of solutions and removal of these problems. It will also be the aim of this paper then to look at these problems in light of general problems faced by EFL learners in Reading.
