Abstract:
Higher education learning spaces communicate expectations about behaviour, creativity, and teaching philosophy beyond the formal curriculum. Within design education in particular, spatial cues such as studio layouts, the visibility of student work, informal collaborative areas, and the overall aesthetic character of learning spaces may influence students’ willingness to experiment, take creative risks, and engage openly with iterative design processes. In this sense, learning environments do not merely host teaching activities but actively communicate pedagogical values and expectations about creative practice.

This paper explores how spatial characteristics of design education environments shape students’ perceptions of creative risk-taking. Drawing on literature from design pedagogy, environmental psychology, and spatial studies in education, the paper examines how learning environments communicate tacit signals about experimentation, critique, failure, and creative confidence. Attention is given to how spatial arrangements can signal whether exploration and iteration are welcomed as part of the learning process or whether students may feel pressure to prioritise polished outcomes. In response to the increasing digitalisation of design practice, higher education institutions are also reintroducing craft-oriented learning environments and studios to encourage experimentation, process visibility, and material exploration.

The discussion is informed by reflective observations developed through sustained academic practice within a design-focused higher education institution. These reflections suggest that spatial features such as visible creative work, flexible studio layouts, and informal collaboration zones may encourage experimentation and peer learning, while more conventional classroom configurations may unintentionally discourage exploratory creative behaviour. The analysis highlights how everyday spatial design decisions influence how students interpret expectations around creativity, critique, and participation.

By examining the relationship between learning environments and creative risk-taking, the paper contributes to ongoing discussions in design education pedagogy and highlights the role of space as an active component of the educational experience. Understanding how spatial environments communicate pedagogical values may assist design educators and institutions in intentionally shaping learning spaces that support experimentation, resilience, and creative confidence.
