Abstract:
With the increasing cyber threats and the increasing use of network technologies, cybersecurity training is becoming a key element of engineering and IT education. Firewalls are a fundamental component of network security and represent the first line of defines against unauthorized access, malicious traffic, and cyberattacks. Despite their widespread application in practice, firewall teaching often remains focused primarily on theoretical aspects, without sufficient practical context.

This article presents an educational approach to firewall training in cybersecurity courses, combining basic theoretical concepts with practically oriented methods for configuration and analysis of typical errors. The main types of firewalls and their educational applicability are examined, as well as key steps in their configuration, used as a tool for building practical skills in students. Good practices are also proposed that support the acquisition of systems thinking and preparation for real-world work environments. The presented approach can be integrated into university courses and labs aimed at training in modern cybersecurity.
