Technology advancements nowadays like the Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality (AR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Cloud Technology, Mobile Internet, 3/4D printing, etc. have the potential to add significant business value and make daily life more convenient and enriching. Talking about the future of the society with imagination, innovation, inspiration, interaction, interconnection and improvement, this is a new paradigm pushing from the pillars of education that needs to be agreed and adapted to the reality of each environment, preventing breaks and digital divides in access to knowledge and technologies that impoverish citizens and therefore to society. A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate multiple information and communication technology and Internet of Things solutions in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets. The smart education is one of the main segments with biggest impact in the smart environment. To cover this high tech new scenario there is a huge demand of new research, profiles and skills. The future framework for smart digital education, leave permanently redefined from the impact of new technologies, experiences and case studies from a more interconnected perspective. Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, AR enhanced by IoT Data uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it. This new technology blurs the line between what is real and what is computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear, feel and smell. The present paper aims to present the current state of the art of AR used in smart digital education, the most relevant opportunities and technical limitations as well as the challenges of building AR applications enhanced by the IoT Data and Artificial Intelligence features with the risks and rewards. A considerable amount of research has been focused on AR usage in education. However, the educational advantages and related utilities of AR have only recently been explored in detail. Therefore, a review of advantages and challenges reported in research studies on AR technology in education can usefully suggest both best practices and areas in which to invest future research and development, so that this technology may be employed to its maximum capacity. The paper is structured as follows. After a short Introduction into the concepts of smart education and AR, Section 2 presents in brief the main findings of the global AR market research analysis where the analysts predict the CAGR growth of more than 82% by 2021. Also, the research identifies the increased emphasis on experiential and collaborative learning as one of the primary growth factors for AR market. Section 3 outlines the top three trends in AR that impact education in terms of AR textbooks, AR gaming and student-centric smart digital environments. Section 4 is focused on advantages and disadvantages of using the augmented reality for education. In Section 5 are drawn conclusions, and future research directions are also discussed.
