Abstract:
The transformation of education is impossible without the transformation of the process that takes place outside the classroom in the hours for independent work, which makes up an essential part of the university academic program. Reading texts, as a communication process that activates the personality of the reader, provides learning a foreign language, gives aesthetic pleasure and ensures the formation of personality, is an integral and necessary part of the independent work of a student. However, working with texts often leads to the fact that students know goals and objectives, but lack the tools to achieve them.

The article investigates characteristics of a "strategic (experienced, flexible, ideal) reader" who understands and chooses the purpose of reading depending on the text, selects, if necessary, sources of information, knows reading strategies, correctly selects them under the purpose, demonstrating reading flexibility. Strategy-based learning increases the activity of the reader and strengthens the role of the teacher as a facilitator of learning activities, as well as makes the learning process more transparent. The article focuses on how foreign language teachers are challenged to improve the educational process in the aspect of forming a skilled reader who is able not only to define goals and objectives but also to choose successful strategies and make algorithms to achieve goals.

The purpose of this research is to provide evidence that in the course of extensive reading first-year students of the faculty of foreign languages of a pedagogical university are able to acquire knowledge of reading strategies that help interact with the text, improve comprehension and increase motivation. The authors propose ways of implementing reading strategy instruction and prove that tactics used by strategic readers increase the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process.
