Abstract:

The goal and focus of every English language teacher is to enhance the English language proficiency of their students so that they will pass the battery of standardized tests conducted at the school district and state levels. As educators, we may need to ask ourselves some questions. Do our students pay a price for their success in learning a second language? Are we merely interested in the mastery they gain over English despite the consequential loss that experience in other areas? It is hoped that an increased awareness of the impact of language learning on students’ lives will help teachers determine more effective and appropriate classroom teaching strategies.
