Abstract:
The present paper makes a review of the concept of multiculturalism and multicultural competence and the place these concepts occupy in the field of education. As our current society is rife with multicultural elements and, most importantly, individuals, education must be a reflection of this reality. The opinions of some scholars regarding the inclusion of multicultural issues in the curriculum are collected as well as a number of different experiences which manifest the positive influences this inclusion has on both teachers and students. With this in mind, we advocate the inclusion of multicultural fiction in the curriculum by means of a didactic proposal. The main beneficiaries of this proposal are EFL teachers working in Primary or Secondary Education and would-be teachers from the field of English literature or culture. What we propose is the didactic exploitation of a book pertaining to Jewish fiction: Schindler’s Ark. First, the work is analysed in terms of its cultural elements and then, a number of activities which serve the purpose of activating schemata in EFL teachers are presented.
