Abstract:
Introduction:
The effective integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in education, not only improved the quality of teaching but also our students are motivated. However, currently all the educational institutions shut downed the physical classes due to the novel COVID 19. This resulted the dramatic change in education by adopting remote teaching using various digital platforms in both synchronous and asynchronous modes. The Middle East College at Oman has also started remote teaching using MS Teams to engage and support its students’ learning as a teaching and learning resilience during the spring 2020 semester. Although, MS Teams is a best tool for digital communication, it doesn’t allow educators for the real time interaction and collaboration with students especially while solving problems in remote teaching. Hence, to overcome this difficulty, I have started delivering online lectures that are prepared using OneNote Class Notebook owing to its unique feature of real time collaboration with students.
My experiences and efficacy on the use of Class Notebook in teaching of Engineering Physics, Engineering Science and Intermediate Mathematics Modules in spring 2020 are summarized below.
What is OneNote Class Notebook?
OneNote Class Notebook is an effective teaching and learning tool developed by Microsoft, a couple of years ago. It is a digital platform allowing educators to setup digital classroom by creating lecture notes, study materials, tutorials as notebooks and to share these materials easily with their students. Further, Class Notebook allows teachers to deliver interactive lectures, for a real-time collaboration with students during remote teaching, to monitor students’ progress on their learning activities and to provide feedbacks.
Efficacy of OneNote Class Notebook in Education:
There was a great improvement in students learning of Engineering Physics, Engineering Science and Intermediate Mathematics modules. This is due to the real time interaction and collaboration with students during the remote teaching and hence, their collaborative skills through digital platforms had enhanced to a broader and global perspective.
Conclusion:
The present global pandemic has demonstrated the importance of building resilience into our educational systems to face various situations in the unpredictable world.
As an overview, the integration of OneNote Class Notebook in remote teaching through MS Teams has made students’ learning deeper and engaged effectively through the new ways of learning. In addition, students’ academic progression rate is improved compared with the previous semester. Also I would like to emphasis that use of OneNote Class Notebooks in teaching and learning not only empower students to take digital notes easily as videos, images, screen shots, audios, texts, printouts, and digital inking but also makes students ownership for their learning. OneNote in remote teaching has also developed skills such as adaptability, creative problem solving among students in addition to the 21st century digital skills. Author is continuing the OneNote Class Notebook based remote teaching also in summer 2020 to conduct a comprehensive research on this teaching strategy. Keywords:
