Abstract:
In my doctoral dissertation I examine what competencies are expected from the employees of the administrative offices in the region of Southern Slovakia, where the Act No. 204/2011 Coll., which amends and supplements Act No. 184/1999 Coll. (named as “Use of Languages of National Minorities”) allows that the Hungarian language, as a minority language can be used in municipalities, where at least 20% of the municipal population is made up of this national minority. Due to this act, it can be assumed that knowledge of the Hungarian language is essential in this region.

In the last couple of years at the public sectors has increased the role of highly qualified employees with a wide range of general knowledge. Needs to be defined the general and professional competencies and skills that are important for successful worker at the public administration. In this way, students could be better informed about what skills and competencies they need to develop, and the higher educational institutes can focus to improve the most valuable skills and competencies.

The aim of the research is to get information about what competencies are expected at the administrative labor market in Southern Slovakia. To get this information the researcher conducting an interview with 5 mayors of municipalities in Southern Slovakia. These 5 interviews are the pilots of a bigger project, where the researcher conducts 25 interviews.

Identifiable, that the communication competencies are the most important, because in Southern Slovakia the administrative matters can be handled in more than one language.
