Abstract:
This paper is in a way the classic story about the good and the bad. It is the fairy tale about something good and something apparently bad. The fairy tale about how something troublesome can turn into something enlightening and uplifting and good. The Ugly Duckling in a new version.
Dyslexia is very common and as such part of the norm rather than beyond the norm. To focus on dyslexia for optimization of learning and retention is therefore good while denial of these specific reading and writing difficulties is bad. Why deny and ignore these linguistic difficulties in our society, which is largely based on language and linguistic competencies?
This paper is the fairy tale about how focus on difficulties with reading and writing can lead to a happy ending/outcome. That is a better outcome for both students with and without dyslexia and for teachers and lecturers.
The paper includes:
1. Dyslexia - discover it, recognize it, and how to remedy it
2. Useful study skills for students with and without dyslexia
3. Dyslexia as the source of inspiration for the development of teaching
Keywords:
Dyslexia, less dropout, study skills, teaching development.
