Abstract:
Digital signage is a generic term for different sizes of digital screens, such as LED walls, primarily found in public spaces. They provide information such as the arrival time and allow train tracking at the station, display advertisements or warning messages for citizens and allow users to interact with the content. Digital signage also delivers a high potential for public and higher education use.

The usage of such displays continues to increase, and new applications are constantly being discovered. Public screens allow us to provide general guidance on various topics, for example, rapid advice in the event of a pandemic. Some screens connect to warning systems to provide urgent information during a disaster. Digital signage is also being applied to promote educational innovation.

Since we found more than 800 scientific articles and conference papers on this research topic, conventional analysis would be very labor-intensive. Thus, we present results from evaluating scientific journal and conference articles by applying the artificial intelligence double funnel, also known as the STIRL (systemic taxonomy for information retrieval from literature) methodology.

By applying this methodology, we identify ten clusters of themes from research conducted over the past sixty years: interacting with displays, analyzing recipients, increasing attention, content management, use of mobile devices, educational messages / learning, perception, social interactions, smart technologies, and advertising. In our study, we describe the acquisition and creation of the literature corpus, the performance of the analysis applying natural language processing, and the collection and description of the clusters. In this way, we can provide a comprehensive overview of the state of research on public screens. Finally, we provide a conclusion and an outlook.
