Abstract:
Information technologies have become one of the fundamental tools that enhance academic productivity, research capacity, and the effectiveness of educational processes in universities. In today’s rapidly digitalizing environment, the flexibility of information technologies used by academicians in their research, teaching, and administrative activities has emerged as an important factor. Information technology flexibility refers to the ability of systems to adapt quickly to different needs, integrate with new technologies, and respond to the changing academic requirements of users. In this context, the flexible structure of information technologies facilitates academicians’ use of technology and may increase information technology productivity.

Information technology productivity is an important factor that directly affects academicians’ academic productivity, time management, and research quality. The effective and efficient use of technology enables academicians to gain significant advantages in processes such as scientific data collection, data analysis, establishing academic networks, and producing international publications. Therefore, examining the relationship between information technology flexibility and productivity contributes to universities in planning technological infrastructure investments more effectively and improving the digital competencies of academicians. Thus, evaluating these two variables in the context of academicians constitutes a critical research area for enhancing both individual academic performance and the competitive strength of higher education institutions.

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of information technology flexibility on information technology productivity among 650 academicians working at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. The Information Technology Flexibility Scale developed by Öztirak (2025), consisting of 7 items and a single dimension, was used, while a 4-item scale developed by Torkzadeh and Doll (1999) and revised by Alam (2016) was employed to measure technological productivity levels. The results of the correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship of 76.8% between information technology flexibility and information technology productivity. According to the regression analysis, when information technology flexibility increases by one unit, information technology productivity increases by 0.813 units (β=0.813, p<0.01). To ensure that the assumptions of the regression analysis were satisfied, the Newey–West algorithm producing robust standard errors was employed.

The findings of this study are expected to contribute to strategic decision-making processes regarding the development of information technology infrastructures in higher education institutions. In particular, the study provides important recommendations for accelerating digital transformation processes in universities, developing flexible and user-oriented information technology systems, and supporting academicians’ technology usage skills. In this context, increasing information technology flexibility is considered a critical factor that strengthens both academic productivity and the overall performance of institutions.
