Abstract:
The bottom part of the footwear connects the plantar surface of the foot with the ground. Its main role is to ensure comfort by protecting the plantar surface of the foot from outside mechanical actions, as well as from the actions of environmental agents (humidity, temperature variations, chemical agents, etc.). The structure of the bottom varies depending on the type of footwear and its complexity depends on the performance of the footwear and on its assembling type. Comfort is a personal and subjective measure of a state of physical ease and absence from pain or constraint. Footwear bottom components’ design, position, geometry and materials properties influence a series of comfort characteristics, such as plantar pressure distribution, cushioning, shock absorption, ease of walking, balance and stability, slip resistance, softness and flexibility, shoe weight. This paper presents the e-learning program “CAD 2D/3D Footwear Soles and Heels”, part of the MOOC “3D CAD Footwear Developer” developed within the Skills4SmartTCLF Erasmus+ project which aims at updating the training and curricula offer in EU Textile, Clothing, Leather, and Footwear (TCLF) sectors to better match industry needs, to support skills development and employment opportunities and enhance the attractiveness of careers and to enhance competitiveness and growth in the TCLF industry as a response to the main existing challenges: skills shortage, digitalization, ageing-workforce and attracting new generations. The “CAD 2D/3D Footwear Soles and Heels” e-learning program focuses on 2D/3D computer-aided tools (modelling and virtual prototyping) and rapid prototyping processes and technologies (additive manufacturing and 3D printing processes). The basis for designing and developing the e-learning program was to identify the future needed skills and trends for the sector by interviewing experts from footwear companies and VET providers and to develop a Qualification Profile and associated Training Curricula targeted to all education and training entities that provide training for the footwear sector. Finally, the e-learning program was validated through a Pilot program that included online, classical and practical sessions. The “CAD 2D/3D Footwear Soles and Heels” program is structured in six chapters: Bottom components for footwear, 3D CAD of soles, 3D CAD of heels, Grading and obtaining the size series for and Moulds for soles and heels, providing videos lessons, references and quizzes for self-evaluation and a final assignment where trainees will have to apply their knowledge to propose a new sole/heel concept and to develop its virtual prototype. The European footwear industry is a traditional and innovative manufacturing industry that produces high-quality products recognized worldwide and the “CAD 2D/3D Footwear Soles and Heels” e-learning programme will help the industry to continue its traditions.
