Abstract:
The FLUENT model (Flexible Universal Education Model for a New Hybrid Teaching) has been developed to address the challenges of contemporary higher education by providing a comprehensive framework for course planning. This model integrates the evolving demands of students and institutional stakeholders while accounting for the complexities of modern educational environments. The primary objectives of FLUENT are to enhance flexibility through new formats of teaching and learning provision, while maintaining high level quality standards. FLUENT promotes a new course design strategy, enabling educators to organize teaching more flexibly and leverage technological opportunities.
Contemporary research indicates that self-regulation of learning is not a fixed personal trait that individual students either possess or lack. It involves instead the selective use of specific processes tailored to each learning task. These self-regulatory processes are teachable and can lead to significant enhancement of students' motivation and achievement. Studies also suggest that self-regulation and learning engagement were positively associated with learning persistence.
During the pandemic, the sudden shift from face-to-face to online teaching and learning led to decreased motivation and increased anxiety among students, likely due to the unexpected and unfamiliar circumstances.
The FLUENT model recognizes that any hybrid, blended, or online education must equip students with tools and practices that support and enhance their autonomy through the development of self-regulation strategies. Self-regulation, teaching presence, and social presence are significant predictors for student learning engagement and persistence in Hybrid, Blended or Online Education.
This paper presents the underlying theoretical approach used to integrate self-regulation practices when designing the FLUENT model, the strategies that are suggested to be used for implementation and the guidelines created to support teachers in promoting the development of self-regulation amongst the students. Keywords:
