Abstract:
The Grade of Medicine of the University Jaume I is an integrated educational system, which means that several knowledge areas are involved in the organization of the subjects. The course syllabus of the subject Genitourinary and Renal Apparatus (MD1761, 2nd course) was initially organized by Anatomy and Physiology areas, whereas the involvement of the Cellular Biology area on this subject has been recently incorporated. Thereby, there is a lack of histology content in the actual course syllabus of the subject. Thus, we performed some teaching activities for the improvement of histological knowledge. They have been carried out in practices and seminars aimed to study contents about the female genital tract during the menstrual cycle, menopause and pregnancy, and the histological study of the breast. In the practices of the female reproductive system, an Aronson puzzle was used, enabling to decrease the individual workload of the students and to reduce the time duration of the practice, a relevant aspect due to the tight time dedicated for those contents on the course syllabus. Moreover, the marks of the continuous evaluation exercise were higher than those obtained with the conventional method teaching. Otherwise, in the mammary gland seminar, the study of clinical cases was implemented, leading to high participation of the students and group discussion. However, in order to assess the impact of this activity on vertical integration studies, future analysis should be performed when those students carry out the subject of Pathological Anatomy in 3rd year of the Grade of Medicine.
