Abstract:
Just mentioning “environment”, almost all, directly think weather temperature, while environment –as effective element in design, involve everything that makes up our surroundings and affects our ability to live. Natural environment is the thermal, atmospheric, luminous, and sonic variations of the exterior world. While artificial or interior environment – within the inner shelter – refers to a complex element in any interior spaces that meet the physical, physiological, and psychological requirements of the inhabitants. The interior environment consists, in addition to air-quality, mechanical, structural, lighting, psychological impact and the forgotten crucial element which is the acoustics! Acoustical environment covers all human existences and experiences. In any practically human surround, the need of an appropriate acoustical environment is a must to enhance the quality of function. Acoustical environment is a branch that provide the best sound surround conditions, where listening and talking are the best experienced.
In other hand, the teaching system is one important tool to learn. And teaching is based on talking and listening. Poor listening environment or poor acoustical environment in the educational spaces affect negatively on students’ ability to attend and process; including learning passion, accommodate information, attention, memory and creation. Educational interior spaces for interior design study should apply all the needed rules to provide such environment in order to enhance the students learning experience. They do need a specific environment to create as design state.
Educational Interior Spaces has many components’ to reach quality design. Its start by the studied zoning which is partly the architect mission then the exceptional task of the interior designer to provide the most satisfactory conditions for intelligible speech and any other sound materials, in addition to prevent any undesirable sound – noise – from the same space or from the adjacent spaces.
Argues mention a lot of studies related to standards guideline for a best acoustical environment in schools, giving all the codes to be followed within the spaces in terms of materials specifications to control the transmission of noise, and to keep the conditional sound level in classrooms. None of studies have covered the universities acoustical environment and specially the interior design department where a great needs of sound levels to provide the best environment for creativity. Thus involves the zoning arrangement, the sound insulation between spaces and between space and mechanical systems, and the sound reinforcement of teachers for better functional and human comfort within lecture halls and studios.
Research should reach the standards guidelines for the interior design of educational spaces classified by type of interior spaces function; lecture hall, studios, workshop, corridors, break rooms and study rooms. It will include the relation between those types of spaces and the interior design process comprising the numbers of students expected which has a great impact on acoustical environment design.
The research will follow the theoretical study to extract the best elements within the interior design elements and educational interior design spaces for design students. A survey study will be conducted for reaching the weak points to searching of best solutions to reach best acoustical environment for educational interior design.
