GENERIC SKILLS ASSESSMENT IN THE MASTER OF LAWS AT UNIVERSITY OF ALMERIA

Abstract:
The Master of Laws of the University of Almeria is wholly designed to provide training and access to the profession of Lawyer regulated by the Spanish Law 34/2006, of 30 October, and its Regulations approved by the Spanish Royal Decree 775/2011, of 3 June. Furthermore, the Master of Laws of the University of Almeria, as an official Master, meets the conditions for access to the PhD established in Art. 6 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official PhD courses. The main professional qualification is the training and access to the profession of Lawyer. The proposed Master of Laws is developed over 14 months, structured in three four-month periods of equal duration (16 weeks), 1st course of 60 ECTS and 2nd course of 30 ECTS. It is structured in six modules that group together different subjects. All Master degrees from the University of Almeria (UAL) should contemplate explicitly, three types of skills: 1st The generic skills included in Royal Decree 1393/2007, establishing the planning of official university studies; 2nd Generic skills of the University of Almeria; 3rd The specific skills of each Master, in this case the Master of Laws. In this paper, generic skills of the UAL (UAL1 to UAL10) are analyzed in 16 subjects (including the Master Final Report) comprising the aforementioned Master: UAL1- Basic knowledge of profession, UAL2- Using Information and Communication Techniques (ICTs), UAL3- Capacity to solve problems successfully, UAL4- Writing and oral expressing with clarity in Spanish language, UAL5- Development of a sense of criticism and self-criticism, UAL6- Ability to work in a group, UAL7- Learning a foreigner language, UAL8- Commitment to Ethical Business, UAL9- Capacity to design, manage and undertake a task by oneself, and UAL10- Social Responsibility of Business. The aim of this paper is to establish the skill weakness till now in the afore mentioned master and make a proposal for traying to solve it in the last academic year. In conclusion, this study has determined and analysed whether the competences offered by the Master of Laws degree of the University of Almeria are those that a student should acquire in order to properly satisfy the current labour market of the lawyer's profession, identifying that the skills of learning a foreign language should be reinforced, given that in a globalised world professionals with knowledge of a second language will be the most in demand, and will be able to compete for employment abroad.Keywords:
