Abstract:
The advancement of digital technologies has catalyzed a transformative shift in educational paradigms, prompting institutions to reconsider traditional paper-based approaches. Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is poised at the forefront of this evolution, presenting two innovative projects, SmartLabOER and BioJupyter, at the forthcoming EDULEARN24 conference.

SmartLabOER pioneers the integration of voice-activated hands-free smart glasses and iPads into laboratory courses, supplanting conventional paper-based scripts with visually immersive digital guides. The students benefit from a digital step-by-step guide, replacing traditional paper-based scripts with a visually engaging format. This transformation not only eliminates the need for cumbersome PDFs but also enhances student interest in the subject, creating a tech-savvy and engaging lab environment. With the voice-activated feature, students can seamlessly navigate through experiments, while capturing moments through video recording or images using the cameras mounted on the smart glasses. This collaborative project involves two other universities - Technische Hochschule Köln (TH Köln) and University of Applied Science Aachen (FH Aachen). By simplifying lab procedures and reducing reliance on traditional methods, SmartLabOER paves the way for a more independent and immersive learning experience.

Complementing SmartLabOER, BioJupyter introduces interactive Jupyter Notebooks within a Jupyter Hub environment, consolidating academic resources for lectures, labs, and exercises. Embracing open-access principles, BioJupyter transcends the constraints of proprietary software, offering students a flexible, device-agnostic platform for collaborative learning and data analysis.

Rhine-Waal University of Applied Science aims to present first-hand insights into the transformative potential of these projects, elucidating the journey towards fully digitalized laboratory sessions and the redefinition of note-taking methodologies and data visualization techniques. With a commitment to collaborative innovation and student-centered pedagogy, our initiatives exemplify a collective vision for the future of education, underscored by the principles of accessibility, interactivity, and academic excellence.
