Abstract:
Teaching and learning are inseparable. The two complements each other in a way. Various methods have been used in teaching students of higher institutions in Nigeria. This paper attempts to give an overview of the concept of lecturing method as against teaching method in tertiary institutions as a strategy for effective teaching and learning. A survey conducted among selected teaching staff revealed that lecturing method of teaching is very prominent and commonly used than any other kind of teaching strategy. In all strata of Nigerian educational system, there is a manifest problem of inadequate qualified teachers, rise in students’ enrollment as well as inadequate teaching facilities. These and others are among the factors responsible for the popularity of lecturing method in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The effect of lecturing method is critically examined in the article. The paper saw the need for professionalism in teaching career and suggested for the capacity building of the non- professional teachers through staff training and development. The conclusion is drawn on the premise of providing plausible recommendations that would improve lecturing method in Tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Keywords:
