Abstract:
Rapid technological innovation, socio-economic restructuring, and environmental instability are redesigning the nature of work. These changes mean that higher education (HE) can no longer rely on its approach to preparing students for employment. This study asks a simple but urgent question: Are we preparing graduates for jobs that are disappearing or for the futures they will actually need to build? To explore this, the study reviews 130 peer-reviewed publications, books, and policy reports published between 2016 and 2025, analysing international evidence on emerging skills and their implications for curriculum design.

The review identifies three interrelated clusters of skills essential for future graduates:
1. Digital and technical skills. The review identified data literacy, artificial intelligence (AI) awareness, computational thinking and technological systems management as foundational for participation in automation-intensive and digitally mediated labour markets.
2. Adaptive and cognitive skills. These include critical thinking, creativity, systems thinking, complex problem-solving and reflective habits that support lifelong learning.
3. Social and cross-cultural skills. These include communication, teamwork, leadership, emotional intelligence and intercultural understanding as indispensable for collaboration in interdisciplinary and globally networked environments.

Across the literature, a clear message is for the need for hybrid skill configurations that integrate technical expertise with higher-order cognitive skills, ethical reasoning, sustainability literacy, and socio-emotional intelligence.

Yet, the analysis also reveals a persistent gap between skills designed and taught within HE and those demanded by contemporary and emerging labour markets, particularly in domains shaped by AI and green transitions. Promising responses include modular and interdisciplinary curricular frameworks, project- and challenge-based pedagogies, experiential and work-integrated learning, and the systematic embedding of systems thinking and sustainability across programs. These pedagogies have been shown to strengthen both professional readiness and civic agency. The study further emphasises the importance of ethically grounded and locally responsive transnational education partnerships that promote co-creation and epistemic inclusivity.

Looking toward 2050, HE is imagined as a flexible, personalised, and globally interconnected ecosystem, where lifelong learning pathways, stackable micro-credentials, AI-supported formative assessment, and immersive digital environments are the norm. Yet, technological innovation must be accompanied by robust ethical governance, digital equity, and sustainability commitments to prevent the exacerbation of existing inequalities. Future graduates will require not only disciplinary expertise and digital fluency, but also futures thinking, resilience, civic literacy, and the confidence to address complex systemic challenges.

Overall, the paper argues that HE should be redefined as a public good with a transformative role. Its purpose is not only to produce job‑ready workers, but to empower learners as co-creators of knowledge and agents of change. By aligning curricula, pedagogy, and policy with inclusive and sustainable development, HE can play a central role in promoting decent work, social justice, and long-term societal resilience.
