Abstract:
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into higher education is reshaping learning processes, student engagement, and the development of transversal competencies. In experiential learning environments such as hackathons and challenge-based projects, AI tools increasingly function as pedagogical mediators that support creativity, narrative construction, and collaborative problem-solving. This study examines the educational impact of AI on student engagement and narrative competence development within an interdisciplinary university hackathon focused on Inclusive Smart Cities.

This study was carried out within the framework of the European project EUonAIR, which aims to foster the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into higher education curricula. Data collection comprised an online questionnaire administered to 66 students participating in an international academic challenge held in Barcelona between January and March 2026, involving multidisciplinary teams from ten European countries, complemented by a focus group with the participating team leaders. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating quantitative analysis with qualitative interpretation of open-ended questionnaire responses and focus group data.

Findings indicate widespread use of AI tools throughout the learning process, particularly during ideation, narrative structuring, and presentation production. Students perceive AI as a valuable support for enhancing narrative clarity, coherence, and engagement in project presentations, especially under time constraints typical of experiential learning settings. At the same time, results highlight the necessity of critical reflection and human supervision to avoid generic outputs, ethical risks, and oversimplification of social issues.

The study concludes that AI can positively contribute to student engagement and learning outcomes when integrated reflexively into experiential pedagogical models. Rather than replacing human creativity, AI acts as a mediating tool that enhances learning engagement, narrative competence, and inclusive thinking, reinforcing its potential as a resource for innovation in higher education.
