Abstract:
The use of tablets in a classroom is a usual practice at any educative level nowadays, from childhood education to university levels. The use of new technologies as an educational tool is a motivation for the students, and this motivation is greater if novelty devices, such as tablets, are considered. In the university, tablets are more usual in classroom due to different reasons, for instance because of the portability, the potential and the applicability. These mobile devices are replacing notebooks and netbooks in the e-learning/e-teaching process at classroom. For this reason, the performing of new didactic materials for these new devices is a necessity. New applications for tablets are being developed for helping to students in the e-learning process. On the other hand, these devices enable to introduce a new self-learning methodology.

There is a great quantity of teaching material developed for a computer. Besides that this material can also be used by a tablet, it can be improved through specific applications by using the characteristics of a tablet; touchscreen, easy web browsing, etcetera. APPES (acronym of APPs of E-Statistics) is an application designed by professionals of statistics and experts in computing, from the University of Granada. The aim of this application is to develop e-teaching applications of statistics for a tablet, by introducing a new methodology. Theoretical and practical materials are introduced in a dynamic form with self-readable texts. Two of the main objectives of the developed methodology are, the virtual e-teaching and to favor the autonomous learning process. The tutorial videos built are one fundamental aspect in this sense. One interesting option of these tutorial videos is that they can be shown with subtitles. In this work, the main characteristics of APPES, its technical and educational aspects in general, and the use of tutorial videos in particular, are shown. This new methodology enables people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to facilitate the learning and teaching of Statistics.
