Abstract:

In Mexico, science has been considered an isolated element from people and just few have had contact. The Council of Science and Technology of the State of Guanajuato (CONCYTEG) developed a program in 2007 called Children and Teenager Academy in the Science. This program is oriented to students from 4th. and 5th. grade of primary school and first grade of junior high school to meet and be involved with researchers. Participants were divided into groups and visited different research institutes and universities in the state. The Agricultural-Industrial Engineering Department of the Universidad de Guanajuato got involved in the program receiving 6 groups in 2.5 years. Five workshops were created according with the age of the students: 2 for food area and 3 for no-alimentary area. Students learned about agricultural research in an interactive and dynamic way where they elaborated bread, jam, natural carmine lipsticks, vermiculture and understood how digital image analysis could help to improve food process. Also university values were promoted creating conditions to establish an integral education. This work describes activities and experiences achieved for professors and participants during the program.
