Abstract:
Educational inequality in India continues to exist due to entrenched pedagogical frameworks that favor rote memorization over genuine conceptual understanding especially in foundational mathematics education apart from just access issues. This paper elucidates the insights of systemic and individual patterns of problem solving in mathematics, of the economically disadvantaged children studying in grade 4 primary school. The progress of the educational system in India has unfortunately leaned towards commercial gains and institutional privatization, due to which the basic need of education has become a privileged resource. The growth of private institutes has caused a disparity as the government schools lack in providing quality education this results in educational methods and practices that do not suffice cohesive knowledge being imparted to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to compete with the highly competitive youth population. The issue is deeply rooted in teaching practices that fail to meet diverse learning needs, low salary structure for government employees, teacher to student ratio per class, lack of funds and family and societal mindset for education to the underprivileged being a liability rather than a necessity.

The research study followed a design-led methodology that incorporated both secondary research, and primary research that encompassed immersive fieldwork, shadowing, informal interviews, and low-fidelity prototype testing at institutions run educational units to cater to conducting classes for primary school children from economically disadvantaged children, after school hours. These institutes aim to help students understand the concepts taught in school. The major research conducted was at the centers, Logic Centre and Welfare Association (LCCWA) and Shakti Foundation which are NGOs working for the betterment of women and children in the slums of Mumbai in India.

The research study identifies flaws in current teaching methodologies, syllabus design, dependence on textbooks, language barriers, lack of customization, lack of inclusivity and minimal student engagement. By analyzing behavioral responses, classroom challenges, and feedback from educators, the research informs the development of accessible, educational tools that are in line with existing curricula. This study explores and demonstrates, through user-tested product interventions, how affordable, tangible, play-based educational resources can facilitate intuitive learning and address practical comprehension deficits in resource-limited classrooms. The study contributes to the field of design research by presenting affordable tangible learning tools as scalable, inclusive, and culturally relevant interventions that can transform abstract textbook concepts into engaging hands-on learning and fun experiences for children aged 7–12, particularly in the economically disadvantaged educational environments, and can also support the implementation of inclusive education for children with special needs. It also suggests systemic design interventions that could integrate such design forums into mainstream classrooms without compromising syllabus requirements or affecting potential exam outcomes.

The framework has the potential to evolve into a broader educational ecosystem, potentially encompassing modular learning libraries, teacher toolkits, activity guides, and assessment resources via AI-powered accessible web platforms.
