Abstract:
This poster presentation explores the concept of increasing authentic learning spaces online and combating in order to combat the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The focus is on adopting Authentic Learning and Assessment (ALA) as a framework to enhance online education and promote student engagement, collaboration, and the development of essential 21st-century skills. The benefits of ALA in higher education are discussed, including fostering intrinsic motivation, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving, and cultivating collaboration. The paper recommends five digital tools—Canva, Hypothes.is, ChatGPT, Flipgrid, and Genialy—which can facilitate an ALA approach in online teaching. These tools offer opportunities for creating authentic learning experiences, engaging students, and promoting meaningful participation while building 21st-century workforce skills. The paper concludes with a proposal for future research to evaluate the efficacy of these tools and their impact on student learning experiences in online education. The research findings will contribute to the growing body of knowledge in online education and provide practical insights for educators seeking to create authentic and engaging online learning environments.
