Abstract:
Workplace learning was traditional in vocational education and training (VET). However, bringing higher education (HE) and the business world closer has also created the need to implement workplace learning at the HE level. Those changes have raised the research question: Can the workplace supervisors at the HE level assure the quality of learning according to the HE standards? How do mutually adapt theoretical studies (not only vocational but also core studies like foundations of law, micro - and macroeconomics, etc.) and practical training?

The study aims to understand the difference between the roles of workplace supervisors at vocational and higher education levels to support the professional development of supervisors.

The concept of learning is applied in two learning environments: school and workplace (Tynjälä, 2008, 2022; Billett, 2014). In the new pragmatic university framework, there is a need to redefine the aims, goals, and ethics of research and instruction from a unique perspective not rooted in the Humboldtian ideals of an autonomous university but in the relationship between society, business enterprises, and the academic world. (Tynjälä, Välimaa, Sarja, 2013).
A phenomenological approach, interviewing workplace supervisors at VET and HE level, were used to collect data. The sample of respondents was compiled from supervisors working in hotels, restaurants, or cafes.

The findings provide insights into workplace supervisors' challenges and recommendations for improving the study process and cooperation between companies and schools.
