Abstract:
Education plays a key role in equipping future generations with the values, attitudes knowledge and skills necessary to address current environmental and societal challenges and to make the most of their capacity to achieve personal and professional fulfilment. Drawing on the foundations of STEAM education and education for sustainable development, this paper presents an innovative project aimed at promoting inquiring and creative minds and STEAM competences in primary and secondary school students, through non-formal educational interventions. Participants were encouraged to analyse the urban environment around them and engage in the design of creative solutions to improve the living spaces around them and to build a more sustainable world. The intervention was based on an active pedagogy to stimulate students’ reflection, creativity and the development of STEAM competences. The pre and post analysis of students’ artefacts shows the impact of the interventions on participants’ beliefs and their capacity to formulate sustainable solutions.
