Abstract:
At undergraduate level, nowadays most degrees include a subject of statistics which try to cover a wide variety of topics providing an elementary introduction to probability and statistics with applications. On the one hand, there is a great variety of measurements and statistical techniques that our students, as future professionals, can use to evaluate research and develop their own projects and, on the other hand, many students have negative attitudes and/or anxiety towards this subject. To improve statistics teaching we have introduced our students in Virtual Teaching to achieve effective learning environments. Some specific teaching strategies developed include computer activities, multimedia materials and new teaching resources such as questionnaires of self-assessment corrected automatically by the system.
We report upon our experiences in the elaboration of a short handbook of formulae and tables. The aim was to elaborate a modern set of tables and a comprehensive list of definitions, concepts, theorems, and formulae adapted to the contents of most of the basic statistics subjects included in the new degrees. Among the advantages we find the following: it facilitates the task of solving practical cases by students, unifies the material that can be used in the exams and allows a quick review of it at the beginning of the exam. Aspects concerning the methodology, the selection of contents and results are discussed in this document. Keywords:
