Abstract:
Environmental subjects in Engineering degrees are being more and more important. The Chemistry Department of the University of Burgos (Spain) is in charge of the subject "Environmental Pollution" of the degree in Industrial Engineering. This subject includes contents such as characterization of natural waters, drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment, air pollution, waste treatment, soil pollution, ISO 14001 implementation, etc.
As for the water contents, we have recently included the use of educational software in order to simulate the dispersion of pollutants in water. The software uses several pathways for its functional organization: the source pathway (where you define the properties of the point source, such as an underwater pipe: pollutant exit velocity, pollutant concentration, height of the point source below the water surface, pollutant exit flow, pollutant density and type of discharge), the stream pathway (where you define the properties of the water stream: water density, stream velocity and stream direction) and the output pathway (where you define which output results are necessary to meet the needs of the modeling analyses).
In this work typical outputs of the software for different situations are shown.
