"SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE" AS A TOOL FOR ACTIVE LEARNING IN THE SUBJECT OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY II IN THE GRADE OF PHARMACY

The European Higher Education Area provides a change of methodological approach towards a model of competence-based learning. Thus, it is necessary to design innovative methods of teaching and learning. For this reason, in the current academic year we have considered incorporating new tools for teaching, to make it new and attractive for students. In this way, a Scientific Conference, entitled "Analytical methods for the determination of nutrients and phytochemicals with clinical and food significance" will be performed which second-year students of Analytical Chemistry II (QA II) of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). The topics chosen by the students dealt with the theme of the Conference, and were proposed by teachers from the Departments of Nutrition and Food Science I and II and Analytical Chemistry. Students interested in participating have presented, in a first phase, an abstract (done in groups), according to the specific indications set about on their length and content. After that, abstracts were evaluated by other groups of students using an evaluation rubric for this purpose. Finally, abstracts were re-evaluated by the teachers of the Department of QAII using the same evaluation rubric. Accepted abstracts will be presented in poster format at the end of the course in the "Scientific Conference" mentioned above. The posters will be evaluated by all teachers involved in the project. This activity aims to improve student participation, promote self-employment and group work, learn how to consult reference works and prepare scientific publications and communications at Conferences. In addition, the student opinion about the activity will be registered to take it into account in planning for the next academic year.
