Abstract:
The educative methodology applied to an entire process of manufacturing is presented. From an applied approach, test pieces are developed, carrying out the corresponding subsequent traction tests, along with results analysis. Society and how we interact with technologies, in a context of changes, define new labor market requirements, evolving with an equal speed. This directly affect the engineers’ formation, who have to keep constantly up-to-date in the applied technologies handling.

The test pieces for this educational experience are produced in a tin alloy due to its low fusion point (231 ⁰C). The objective of this work is to link different subjects related to manufacturing process, making possible for students to observe, work and understand a manufacturing process from a comprehensive perspective and its application in a real framework. First, students proceed to design the standardized test pieces. To design these pieces, undergraduates use 3D CAD (Computer Assisted Design) software like Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks. After getting the model designed, it is required to 3D print it. For this purpose, PLA (Polylactic Acid) is used as a raw material. Once the model is ready, it is used to carry out the sand mold. Another key element to be calculated is the sprue through which melted metal is poured into the gate and thence into the mold, once the sand mold is finally ready.

After metal solidification pieces are removed from the mold and hereafter they have to be mechanized in order to correct imperfections caused by the manufacturing process. Finally, test pieces are placed in an universal traction test machine. Performing the traction test requires the use of 3 test pieces to allow the comparative between results. It makes possible to observe the quality of the manufactured test tubes. The results enable to analyze graphically the deformation obtained in the test tubes until its break. Thereby, students develop conclusions applied to the complete manufacturing process along with the possibilities provided by 3D design and its engineering applications.
